River-response and Terrace Agradation in the Mediterranean Iberian Peninsula during Historical Times
نویسنده
چکیده
Mediterranean fluvial environments have responded sensitively to past changes in climate, physiographic conditions and human activity. Chronosequences of river terraces and alluvial deposits were established using morphologic, sedimentological and pedologic criteria, Cand Pb-dating techniques, historical data and pottery fragments. The objective of this study addresses the fluvial dynamic of several river systems focusing on the Vera basin and the lower Penedes basin over the last 1600 years. The correlation between 13 catchments of Southwest, Southeast and Northeast Spain, studied by this research and by various authors, shows that fluvial activity increased during the cooler Holocene climate events such as the Early Medieval Ice Advance (6 – 10 century) and the Little Ice Age (15 – 19 century). In contrast, fluvial dynamics during the Medieval Climate Optimum were insignificant.

The uncertainty of Late Pleistocene range expansions in the western Mediterranean: a case study of the colonization of southeastern Spain by the spurthighed tortoise, Testudo graeca
Aim Recent biogeographical studies have postulated a North African, Late Pleistocene, origin for some species of the Iberian Peninsula. However, a robust assessment of such range expansions requires high-resolution molecular tools to resolve overlapping biogeographical and cultural processes. Here we aim to determine whether the spur-thighed tortoise, Testudo graeca, arrived in southeastern Spa...
متن کاملAlu insertions in the Iberian Peninsula and north west Africa--genetic boundaries or melting pot?
The Western Mediterranean Basin joins a set of ethnically different populations as Iberians and Basques in the North shore and Berbers and Arab-speakers in the South one. In spite of this differentiation, they have maintained historical contacts since ancient times. The existence of a possible common genetic background (specially for Berbers and Iberians) together with the genetic impact of the...
متن کاملRole of orography in the spatial distribution of precipitation over the Spanish Mediterranean zone
The effects of orography on the precipitation field in the Spanish Mediterranean zone are studied through numerical simulations from a climatological point of view. The main atmospheric patterns that produce significant precipitation in the considered area, derived in a previous study, have been used as input data. The numerical simulations have been performed using the HIRLAM model. We isolate...
متن کاملMillennial scale impact on the marine biogeochemical cycle of mercury from early mining on the Iberian Peninsula
[1] The high-resolution mercury record of a Posidonia oceanica mat in the northwest Mediterranean provides an unprecedented testimony of changes in environmental mercury (Hg) loading to the coastal marine environment over the past 4315 yr BP. The period reconstructed made it possible to establish tentative preanthropogenic background Hg levels for the area (6.8 1.5 ng g in bulk sediments). A sm...
متن کاملThe response of Iberian rivers to the North Atlantic Oscillation
In this study we analyzed the influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) on the streamflow in 187 sub-basins of the Iberian Peninsula. Monthly and one-month lagged correlations were conducted to assess the spatiotemporal extent of the NAO influence on Iberian river discharges. Analysis of the persistence of the winter NAO throughout the year was also undertaken, together with analysis of...
